Bernstein Medical Tip: When a person decides that they would like to do something about their hair loss and has decided to undergo a hair transplant it is important to have an in-depth pre-surgical consultation prior to your procedure. This may be done at the initial consultation or in subsequent meetings. Not only do you wish to be sure to have a good understanding of the procedure itself and all that is involved, but you want to make sure that you and your surgeon are on the same page and that you work together to develop a master plan for any future hair loss. It is only after you have a realistic expectation of your hair transplant results that you should precede with surgery.

During your consultation the physician should discuss the various options that may be open to you, and you both should be honest and upfront about any limitations or expectations from your hair transplant. Make sure that the physician has a clear understanding of what your expectations of your hair transplant results are. And discuss them openly.

Your doctor should be very honest when discussing each aspect of your procedure. Your doctor should discuss age appropriate hairlines with you. It should be explained that transplanted hair can take between 10 and 12 months to reach full growth; not all patients are candidates for hair transplantation; in some cases more than one hair transplant session may be required; the direction of the transplanted hair will be imperative to the overall appearance, etc.

If you have discussed these issues with your doctor and you have reasonable expectations for you hair transplant results and chances are you will be much happier with your hair restoration procedure.
