What is DHT?

What is DHT?

Conduct a little research online about hair loss and you soon discover that various experts have different beliefs about how to stop it. Some say it is diet, while others claim it has more to do with a clean scalp and the right care products. Still others insist that reducing baldness in both men and women is a matter of choosing the right herbal supplements. However, few disagree about the role of DHT in hair loss.

DHT is short for dihydrotestosterone, and both men and women are at risk for elevated levels of this hormone in the body. High levels of DHT cause hair follicles to die and an increase in shedding and hair loss. As a result, the new hair coming in cannot keep up with the loss and baldness (for men) or thinning (more common in women).

Too much DHT is not considered a serious health concern outside of premature hair loss. It is a hereditary condition with some men beginning to lose hair along their hairline as early as late teens. For women, it is more common to begin experiencing thinning hair in their thirties or forties.

If you are one of the millions of men and women concerned about hair loss, keep in mind that hair loss products and hair transplants are more effective than ever before. So do some research and talk to your doctor about which treatment plan might be best for you.
