What is Propecia?

Propecia is a pill used to treat baldness in men

While Rogaine is a topical foam used to treat baldness in both men and women, Propecia hair loss treatment (also called Finasteride) is a pill and should only be used by men. This pill is the only FDA-approved hair loss pill that treats male pattern baldness. Since it is a pill, Propecia works systemically - or from the inside out. It is now known that testosterone, in the form of dehydotestosterone (or DHT), is the primary cause of genetic men's hair loss. Elevated levels of DHT cause hair follicles to grow thinner and also shorter. This process repeats itself and baldness results. Propecia is a DHT blocker and is known to stop the formation of DHT immediately. Some men who take this pill see a reduction in the shedding of their hair in three months. Propecia is taken once a day, for up to 12 months. If you stop taking it before that time, you could lose any hair you grew during that time. Although nine of 10 men who took Propecia correctly experienced benefit from it, you won't be able to regrow all the hair you've lost prior to taking this pill. Also, some men have experienced side effects from Propecia so talk at length with your doctor before deciding to take Propecia hair loss treatment.
